Apps Not Installing After iOS Enrollment
Problem
Section titled “Problem”After enrolling an iOS device in CapaOne MDM, required apps are not being installed — or installation is significantly delayed. This typically happens when the device responds with “Not Now” during enrollment, which defers the MDM app installation prompts.
This is an iOS behavior where the device temporarily declines push notifications from the MDM server, causing forced/required apps to remain pending in the queue.
Solution
Section titled “Solution”There are two approaches depending on how long the device has been stuck.
Option 1 — Wait
Section titled “Option 1 — Wait”iOS will automatically retry the MDM push after a period of time. If the device is online and enrolled, apps may eventually install on their own without any manual intervention.
Option 2 — Restart the device and clear the queue in CapaOne
Section titled “Option 2 — Restart the device and clear the queue in CapaOne”If apps have not installed after waiting, follow these steps:
-
Restart the iOS device.
- Power the device off and back on. This re-establishes the MDM connection and clears the deferred “Not Now” state.
-
Clear the queue in CapaOne.
- Navigate to Apple > Endpoints in CapaOne.
- Locate the affected device.
- Click the three dots (options menu) to the right of the device name.
- Select “View Request”.
- Click “Clear Queue” to remove any stuck pending tasks.
-
Verify app installation.
- After clearing the queue, CapaOne will re-send the app installation commands to the device.
- Check the device after a few minutes to confirm the apps are being installed.
How to Prevent Stale Idle Devices in the Future
Section titled “How to Prevent Stale Idle Devices in the Future”If you regularly store devices or deploy them in kiosks, implement these settings to keep them synced:
-
Keep Devices Connected to Power: If a device is plugged into power, it will not drop its Wi-Fi connection when it goes to sleep.
-
Push a “Keep Alive” App Profile: Configure your MDM payload to keep the Wi-Fi connection active, or utilize an app in Single App Mode / Kiosk Mode if the device is meant to be a dedicated tool.
-
Utilize Cellular SIMs: Devices with cellular connections maintain a continuous, low-power data state that reacts much more reliably to APNs push pings than sleep-mode Wi-Fi.
Good to Know
Section titled “Good to Know”Before troubleshooting app installation issues, always verify that the app has been created in CapaOne with an active VPP license. Apps distributed via Apple’s Volume Purchase Program require a valid, assigned license for each device or user — if the license is missing, expired, or not yet synced, the app will not install regardless of the device state.
You can check the current VPP license status under Apple → VPP Licenses in CapaOne. For more details, see Apple VPP License Tracking.
If the license count for an app is not updating after purchasing additional licenses in Apple Business Manager, you can force a manual sync by clicking the refresh button in the bottom right of the Apple → VPP Licenses page.
If nothing happens after clicking refresh, check whether the VPP token has expired. An expired token will prevent CapaOne from syncing with Apple Business Manager, meaning license counts will not update and app distribution will stop working. If the token is expired, it must be renewed in Apple Business Manager and re-uploaded to CapaOne. See Apple VPP Integration for steps on updating the token.
