A licensed Device Application installs an app that you bought through Apple's Volume Purchase Program (VPP). When the app is installed on a device, CapaInstaller assigns a license if needed. When the app is removed, the license is revoked again.

You can create the Device Application from a license in **System Administration**, or let CapaInstaller create device applications automatically when the VPP account is synchronized. You can also create a licensed app in the Application Editor. See [Apple Volume licenses with CapaInstaller MDM](/capainstaller/the-capainstaller-console/configuration-management/getting-started-with-app-deployment/apple-volume-licenses-with-capainstaller-mdm/).

:::note[Before you start]
Your VPP account is linked and synchronized. See [How to Manage Apple Volume Purchase Program](/capainstaller/the-capainstaller-console/system-administration/how-to-use-system-administration/how-to-manage-apple-volume-purchase-program/).

## Create a Device Application from a license

1. In **System Administration**, expand **Software Accounts → Apple Volume Purchase Programs**, your VPP account, and **Licenses**.
2. Right-click the app and select **Create Device Application**.
3. In **Choose Management Point**, select the root Configuration Management Point to create the application in.
4. Select the **Primary Assignment Method**: **User Assignment** or **Device Assignment**.
5. Optionally, select a **Secondary Assignment Method**. It's used when the primary method isn't possible for a device. It must be different from the primary method.
6. Enter a **Changelog** description and click **Ok**.

The Device Application is created with the name of the app, under **Device Applications** in the Configuration Management Point you selected. Link it to devices, users, or groups to deploy the app.

For macOS apps, the assignment method is always **Device Assignment**.

## Create device applications automatically

1. Right-click your VPP account and select **Edit**.
2. Select **Auto create new apps from the VPP**.
3. Enter a prefix for the names of the apps that are created, for example `VPP - `.
4. Enter the destination folder for the apps, for example `Apps from VPP Program\Company`.
5. In **Choose Management Point**, select the Configuration Management Point to create the apps in.
6. Optionally, in **Choose BusinessUnit**, select a Business Unit. The apps are then also placed in that Business Unit.
7. Click **Ok**.

When the account is synchronized with Apple, CapaInstaller creates an iOS Device Application for the apps it finds in the account. The application name starts with the prefix, and the application is placed in the destination folder.

## User or device assignment

| Method | How it works | Requirements |
|:-------|:-------------|:-------------|
| **User Assignment** | The license is assigned to the Apple ID of the device user. The user can use the app on all their devices with one license. | The user must be invited to the VPP account and must accept the invitation. |
| **Device Assignment** | The license is assigned to the device's serial number. No Apple ID is needed. | iOS 9 or later, or macOS. |
