# How to Update

> How to plan and perform a CapaInstaller update, including preparation, setup, portal updates, and promoting changes to sub-points.

Follow these steps to update CapaInstaller, from planning through promoting the update to your sub-points.

## Planning

:::caution[Plan the upgrade]
When planning an update of CapaInstaller, follow these recommendations.

1. Run the update procedure in a service window where system load is low and downtime for CapaInstaller services has little or no impact.
2. Run the update as a member of the System Administrators group (if CapaInstaller Security is enabled) or the CapaInstaller Administrator group. If these security requirements aren't met, you can't patch CapaInstaller.
3. Watch for antivirus software locking files while they're copied to the server. If this happens, disable the antivirus for the duration of the update.

## Preparation

1. Backup your CapaInstaller Database.
2. Lock the server by selecting *Lock this server* in > [Management server properties](/capainstaller/the-capainstaller-console/system-administration/what-is-system-administration/servers/management-servers/management-server-properties/).
3. If you're updating between major release versions, download the latest setup from [CapaInstaller](/capainstaller/).

## Setup

Run the Setup.

If you are updating an existing installation with a new minor build, just run the setup. It will prompt you to download the latest version.

Click Update to start the update process.

Select *Remove downloaded files* to clean up the downloaded files (C:\Program Files\Common Files\CapaInstaller\Setup)

:::note[Important]
After setup has completed patching of CapaInstaller, verify that the patched plug-in has been updated by starting the CapaInstaller Console.

Go to the Help menu and click About.

Verify that the version of the patched plug-ins equals the version number stated in the patch release notes.

## Updating the Management Portal (only if you use it)

:::note[Important]
The Windows installer package is located in the root configuration management point share, at
`...\Resources\Management Portal\CapaInstaller Management Portal.msi`.
:::

1. **Execute** the Windows Installer package *CapaInstaller Management Portal.msi*.
2. **Select** *Next* and complete the guided installer.

## Promote the updates

Promote the updates for each sub-point to ensure system components are distributed to the sub-points.

1. Select **Promote** on each point to update, and select all the items to promote.

2. After the promotion finishes, update each server on the target point. In the System Administration plugin, right-click the management server to update and select **Update now**.

3. Once promotion to all sub-points is done and Update Now requests are completed for all servers within the points, you can unlock the management servers again.

Validate that Update Now requests are completed by checking the changelog for the server and confirming that synchronization is achieved.

4. Promote the OSD point client and core components.
